After month of back and forth discussions, a deal has finally agreed and the Portuguese manager is set to step down from his role as Flamengo boss.
Portuguese media already reported that Jesus is due to travel to Lisbon this weekend, in order to formalize the agreement with the Portuguese giants. As per reports, details of the contract include a three-year deal that would see the 65-year-old earn six million euros per season.
In line with those reports, Benfica have now confirmed them as true having released details of the agreement on Friday evening.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD (“Benfica SAD”) informs, under the terms and for Article 248-A of the Securities Code, that it has contacted the CR Flamengo, stating its intention to hire the coach Jorge Jesus, having started negotiations for this purpose..”
“Furthermore, Benfica SAD presented a proposal for a sports work contract to coach Jorge Jesus and the offer was accepted by him.” This was the statement posted on the official Benfica website.
Fans have so far given their blessing to the development as they have no problem with welcoming a face they are very familiar with.
For Flamengo, it would mean they have lost a proper technician and it comes at a tricky time just before the Brazilian championship.
Hired in June 2019 by Flamengo, Jorge Jesus leaves the team after 57 matches. With 43 victories, ten draws and four defeats, the Portuguese won 81.2% of total points available to him. With the manager further lifting the Brasileirão, Libertadores, Supercopa do Brasil, Recopa Sul-Americana and Carioca last Wednesday, the 65-year-old has more titles than defeats in Fla. Quite a remarkable achievement.
