Sao Paulo fans were quick to note that Gomes won’t be the first of their players to leave for Ajax. Sao Paulo and Ajax both have a good relationship with the Dutch outfit recently signing David Neres and Antony from the Arena Corinthians.
The comments got lot of traction so bad that the hashtags “Igor Gomes” and “Ajax” were among the most talked about trends in Brazil.
Asides Ajax, Real Madrid are another side reported to be interested in the Brazilian. The versatile midfielder has impressed in recent months and has been monitored by the Spanish giants.
It is more than clear than Gomes’ next destination would most likely be Europe. Due to that, it’s been reported that the 21-year-old is now looking to secure a Portuguese passport. With the document, he would not have to use a vacancy as a foreign player in European teams. Igor Gomes’ father has already started working on securing that.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it could yet take longer than expected. In general, the waiting time for someone from the Sao Paulo region to attain the passport could be around six months to a year.
Due to that, the likely time Gomes could make any move at all is next summer. The reported fee Real Madrid are willing to pay is within the range of £45 million.
Sao Paulo’s football director Rai has already admitted Gomes has interest from European sides.
“It’s true … What we can say today is that (Igor Gomes) is a player that is attracting the attention of European clubs. But he had no official contact. It is a reality that he is arousing interest, I have already spoken with European friends, who comment, but that is all – said Raí at the time when Real Madrid’s interest was reported.”
At 21, Gomes is an important part of the Sao Paulo team and has grown to be a starter even displacing idol Hernanes on the bench.
