The veteran defender joined the Gunners from Chelsea last summer and is set to see his one year deal run out at the end of the season.
Arsenal have an option to extend Luiz’s contract for another year but it’s more than likely the Gunners would let the 33-year-old walk for free this summer.
The decision from the Gunners is said to be solely based on the fact that the North London side are looking to cut costs by reducing their wage bill.
Just recently, Arsenal had to make their players agree a 12.5% pay cut to their current wages to help ease the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
At 33, David Luiz is approaching the latter years of his career and is still one of the Gunner’s top earners. That is majorly why the North London side may let him leave the club.
The issues mentioned above are what Fenerbahce could capitalize on. The most recent report is that club president Ali Koç is happy to grab the opportunity and has already been in contact with the Brazilian defender.
David Luiz has never failed to mention that he could be tempted to join former side Benfica. The Portuguese side are also said to be monitoring his contract situation. However, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are in the driving seat as they have offered more wages even more than what he currently earns at Arsenal.
Asides the issue of wages, David Luiz could also see himself become a fringe member of the Arsenal squad. The Gunners are set to sign fellow Brazilian centre-back Pablo Mari on a permanent deal from Flamengo. The club also have teenage centre-back William Saliba returning back on loan from French side St Etienne. In addition to that, the Gunners are still favorites to sign highly rated Upamecano from RB Leipzig.
All of that adds to the uncertainty surrounding David Luiz staying longer at Arsenal. Fenerbahce could offer the Brazilian regular football plus the prospect of increased wages. Surely, that would be hard to turn down for a player of his age.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hailed the defender’s impact at the club but only time will tell where Luiz would be playing his football next season.
