Flamengo’s bad luck continued as they slid closer to the relegation zone after being thrashed 6-1 by Sao Paulo on Sunday.

Both teams were reduced to 10 men with midfielder Renato and Sao Paulo fullback Junior being dismissed in the 20th minute.

Edcarlos out jumped the Flamengo defence to head Sao Paulo in front on three minutes and, after Josafa equalised, put the visitors ahead again with a replica effort in the 25th minute. Amoroso 2, Mineiro, Tiago and Souza also on target.

“I feel ashamed and I think the rest of the team feels the same way,” said Junior Baiano.

The defeat left Flamengo dangerously close to relegation in 17th place in with just 34 points.

At the top of the table Corinthians managed to stay top by drawing 1-1 with Palmeiras despite playing with 10 men for most of the game.

Carlos Tevez put Corinthians ahead with a superb individual goal in the 20th minute. With Juninho Paulista levelling with a penalty three minutes later after Fabricio upended Diego Souza.
