Next year the Brazilian Championship wil be reduced to 20 clubs and its calendar changed to coincide with European leagues.

From 2006 the league will be reduced from 22 clubs to 20, with games scheduled from April to December with a one-month break for the World Cup the CBF said yesterday.

“It’s the form I consider ideal,” CBF president Ricardo Teixeira said on the CBF’s web site.

The final change is planned for 2007, when Brazil will change its schedule to mimic the August-May European season, Teixeira said.

“With nearly two years for clubs to adapt, we are going to adjust Brazil’s soccer calendar to the calendar used in Europe,” he said.
