Pele has publicly spoken for the first time on the topic of a potential Real Madrid move for Robinho, opining that the young attacker should stay with the Brazilian club a while longer.

“When I stayed with Santos, I was able to bring more people to the stadium to support Santos,” he declared. “If Robinho also stays, he will do the same.”

“Robinho must stay.”

“When I was 19 years old and already a World Cup winner, Madrid made an incredible offer to me, but Santos made sure they improved my contract and I stayed,” recalled Pele.

“For several years, the club rejected fantastic proposals from European clubs, until 1974 when I ended my career in Brazil.”
