Fluminense have confirmed they have parted company with fiery forward Romario.

The veteran striker fell out with coach Alexandre Gama and has been fired by Fluminense, although the manager denied having any responsibility for wielding the axe.

“I have decided to support Gama and end the contract of Romario with Fluminense now,” stated president David Fischel.

“We have analysed many facts, like the ethical, financial and commercial aspects and we reached the decision that the best thing for the club is to let Romario leave.

“We are now going to try and reach a friendly agreement with Romario for ending his contract but I think that he will not accept this so we will have to pay him a month and a half of his salaray and that is nearly $18,000.

“Romario knows that he has not been training like he should have been doing and that made the relationship between him and the club a little bit difficult.

“This is like a couple that have been married for nearly three years but now they have to divorce.”
