Cruzeiro and Tombense played out to a goalless stalemate at Mineirão on Thursday afternoon. The game was valid for the sixth round of the Mineiro Championship.
It was a game lacking creativity and no real chance at goal for a good part of 90 minutes. However, Cruzeiro do have goalkeeper Fábio to thank after he saved a penalty late on to ensure that the game ended in a stalemate.
Cruzeiro started the game with yet another dynamic midfield lineup, quite similar to the one in the game against América-MG before the Mineirão Championship was halted. Manager Felipe Conceição made five changes to his side and Matheus Barbosa, Manoel, Marcinho, Rafael Sóbis and Bruno José. However, it was the entry of Airton after the break that saw Cruzeiro perform better upfront in the second half.
Youngster Matheus Pereira was unable to feature as he was sent off in the final stages of the game against América-MG. However, he will surely get the nod for their next outing as Alan Ruschel, his competition for a spot, was given a red card in the move that led to the penalty for Tombense. Meaning, Ruschel will now miss the game against Boa Esporte at the very least.
The result didn’t do much good for either side as they both remain out of the qualifying zone for the semi-finals of the Mineiro Championship. Both teams will play their next games on Sunday. Cruzeiro will travel to Varginha where they’ll take on Boa Esporte while Tombense welcomes América-MG in a later fixture.
