It was a debut to remember for new head coach Vagner Mancini. Timão defeated Athletico-PR even with a man down, scoring late into the game, at extra time. In the 95th minutes, Everaldo scored the winning goal at the Arena da Baixada for the 16th round of the Brasileirão.
Bruno Méndez was sent off in the 76th minutes but Corinthians still went on to get the win.
In the first half, Athletico-PR and Corinthians avoided taking risks and made lots of mistakes going into the game. The first big change came from the away side after three minutes when Mateus Vital saw the ball inside the goal area but failed to score. The Hurricane had a quick response in the eight minute with a shot from Geuvânio saved by Walter. In the absence of Cassius, Walter still made two great saves in the first half, a header from Erick and a shot from Christian.
In the second half, The Hurricane came back strong and with less than 10 minutes into the second period already forced three great saves from Walter. The chances came from Geuvânio, Renato Kayzer and Ravanelli. In the 60th minute, Geuvânio got past Kayzer from the left corner of the pitch and hit a low shot but the goalkeeper stretched out to keep the goal from going in. Corinthians also had an incredible chance wasted in the 70th minute following a counter attack, when Fagner almost met Cazares cross in the goal area.
In the 75th minute, with the ball out of play, defender Bruno Méndez threw a punch at Renato Kayzer and after reviewing the VAR, he was sent off.
The Hurricane returns to the field next Saturday against Atlético-GO while Corinthians take on Flamengo the next day at the Neo Química Arena.
