Internacional did all they could to remain in the Libertadores but it was not enough as they bowed out of the competition on Wednesday night
After falling down to a 1-0 defeat to Boca Juniors in the first leg, Inter needed to win by more than one goal to advance to the quarterfinals of the competition. They played some good football and an own goal from Frank Fabra saw them level matters in the 48th minute of the game.
Inter held on to their lead but they could not manage to add more goals that would have killed off the game.
The match eventually dragged on to penalties and Colorado fell flat again after misses from Rodrigo Lindonso and Peglow proved to be consequential.
Boca Juniors won the game via penalties and were the ones who clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the competition.
Boca Juniors will now take on Racing for their quarterfinal fixture in the Libertadores but there is no set date yet for the match-up.
Inter can take positives from the fact that they put out a good overall performance on the evening. In fact, it is perhaps their best outing under Abel Braga so far. Once again, their bad luck in penalties continue after they suffered a similar outcome when they beat América-MG 1-0 but also bowed out of the quarterfinals of the Brazil Cup after losing on penalties too.
Now out of the competition, Inter will fully turn their focus on the Brazilian Championship. For their next outing, they play against in a game valid for the 25th round of the competition.
