Brazil’s journey in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024 ended on penalties, where Dorival Júnior’s team lost 4-2 to Uruguay after a goalless draw in regular time. The shootout started badly for the Seleção, as Éder Militão missed the first shot after Federico Valverde opened the scoring for the Celeste.

Apparently, the Real Madrid defender had already been struggling in front of the goal beforehand. According to Eder Traskini of UOL Esporte, the 26-year-old had missed both penalties he took in the last training session before the quarterfinals.

Both shots reportedly went to the same side he chose at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. However, while the penalty against Uruguay was saved by goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, the two from training reportedly hit the right post.

The aforementioned report claims that the starters had two attempts each in the last session, and Militão apparently missed both chances.

“We decided right there on the spot. I said I would take the first one, I was confident. That’s how penalties are. We train to make them, but there’s a goalkeeper on the other side and, unfortunately, I missed. Rochet was successful. I don’t have much to say or point out. He saved it, credit to him. Now we have to move on. It will be difficult days, but it’s time to think and rest. It wasn’t what we planned; we wanted to advance. We have to have a good season and continue well on the path to the Qualifiers,” Militão said after Brazil’s elimination.
