The 2024 Brasileirão is a season of many firsts. It was in this edition of the Brazilian league championship that the tournament saw, for the first time, a player from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yannick Bolasie, and it appears that, for the first time in history, a Dane will play in Brazil’s league.

Grêmio has agreed on the arrival of Martin Braithwaite, a 33-year-old Danish forward who, after a long career in European football, will have an unprecedented stage, both for him and for any other Dane in recorded history, in Brazilian football.

The player, with past stints at RCD Espanyol, FC Barcelona, Middlesbrough, and Toulouse among others, will arrive in Porto Alegre in the coming days to undergo a medical examination and subsequently sign his contract with the tricolor club, thus becoming the first Danish footballer in the recorded history of the Brasileirão.

According to the Transfermarkt database, never in history has a footballer born in Denmark played a match in the First Division of Brazilian Football, so unless there is some unrecorded historical exception, Braithwaite will be the first Dane to play in Brazil in all of history.

Martin Braithwaite has played in his native Denmark, France, England, and Spain, where he has played a total of 484 matches, scoring 127 goals and providing 48 assists.

Additionally, he has represented his national team in a total of 69 matches in which he has scored 10 times, also playing in European Championships and World Cups.
