During the 13th round of the Brazilian Championship Série C, a match between Botafogo-PB and Confiança at Estádio Almeidão quickly fell apart when tear gas, deployed by the Military Police to quell a fan brawl outside, drifted onto the field.
This caused an interruption just five minutes into the game, affecting players, fans, and journalists. Among those impacted, reporter Phillipy Costa from CBN Paraíba described experiencing intense burning in his eyes.

The game paused for 10 minutes as the air filled with gas, prompting fans from the Sol Stand to rush onto the field seeking refuge. Once the tear gas dissipated, they returned to their seats, and the match resumed.
Major Batista of the Military Police explained the deployment of tear gas was a preventive measure against a potential clash between rival supporters, but the wind carried the gas into the stadium unexpectedly.
This incident not only halted play but also highlighted the challenges of maintaining safety while managing large crowds. The match, which eventually ended in a 3-3 draw, continued under tense conditions.
