Mamelodi Sundowns maintain their dominance in the South African Premier League thanks to a superb goal from Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro, who secured a 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in the most prestigious match of the season so far.

Ribeiro scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, sending a missile over goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to find the corner of the net. This tense match in Soweto was marked by nine yellow cards distributed.

With this fifth goal of the season, Lucas Ribeiro now sits at the top of the Premier Soccer League scorers’ rankings. Arriving mid-year from Belgian side SK Beveren, Ribeiro also scored twice on his CAF Champions League debut last weekend.

Sundowns dominate the league

Mamelodi Sundowns, seeking a seventh consecutive league title, currently top the table with a seven-point lead over second-placed Golden Arrows after seven consecutive wins since the start of the season. A win in their next home league match against Stellenbosch on September 27 would see them equal the record of Kaizer Chiefs, who started the 2014-15 season with eight wins in a row.

For their part, Orlando Pirates, the other South African club to have won an African championship title, are in 11th place in the standings, having played two matches less than Sundowns.
