The list of 10 nominees for the 2024 Lev Yashin Trophy had two notable absences. Brazilians Alisson and Ederson were not included by France Football magazine for the award for best goalkeeper of the year, which is presented at the same ceremony as the Ballon d’Or.

The chosen ones to be in the shortlist were Diogo Costa (Porto), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid), Mike Maignan (AC Milan), Giorgi Mamardachvili (Valencia), Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Unai Simon (Athletic Club), Yann Sommer (Inter Milan) and Ronwen Williams Mamelodi Sundowns – South Africa).

Liverpool’s Alisson won the award in its first edition in 2019. Manchester City’s Ederson came second last year, when the prize went to Dibu Martínez after Argentina won the 2022 World Cup.

The absence of the two main goalkeepers in the Brazilian national team was not the only notable one. Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) is also not on the list, although in this case it can be explained by the long absence he had last season due to injury, which allowed the Ukrainian Lunin to emerge at the top.

Ederson also missed a few matches, although he was a regular in goal for the Premier League champions. He played 33 games from the start and managed 10 clean sheets in the English league.

However, the leader in this statistic was the Spaniard David Raya (Arsenal) with 16 games without conceding a goal. Even Jordan Pickford (Everton) had a better figure with 13 games without having to go inside to look for the ball.

Alisson Becker, meanwhile, managed to keep eight clean sheets. The Liverpool player missed 10 Premier League games last season through injury, when he was replaced by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Another factor that may explain his absence has to do with the poor form of the Brazilian national team. Sixth in the South American Qualifiers after losing three games in a row, they also left prematurely in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa América.
