Dangers of fractures in the elderly

Orthopedist Henrique Cabrita notes that hip fractures in seniors often don’t necessitate surgery. However, the immobilization required for recovery can lead to severe secondary health issues, such as impaired lung and intestine function. Despite optimal medical care, these complications are common, stressing the frailty associated with age and immobility.

Carlos Tucci, from Albert Einstein Hospital, insists on prompt treatment for elderly fractures to avoid prolonged immobility. He explains that the most frequent fractures in the elderly affect the hips, spines, and wrists, often resulting from osteoporosis.

Interestingly, Tucci points out that bones might break even before a fall, a phenomenon particularly common among women.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of preventative measures and heightened awareness around osteoporosis, to help reduce such devastating outcomes for the elderly.
