After being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the CBF and Tite broke their contractual relationship, which had been in force since 2016, with the intention of restructuring the Seleção’s sporting project for the tournaments of the near future.

Exactly on December 9, 2022, Tite directed his last match at the helm of the national team and, since then, the CBF has been far from the stability that, under Tite, it once managed to maintain for a long period.

Ramon Menezes, Fernando Diniz and now Dorival Júnior: How has Brazil fared post-Tite? Today on Sambafoot we put the spotlight on this topic.

Brazil’s numbers with Tite at the helm

Following Dunga’s dismissal in 2016, Tite was chosen to take charge of the Seleção ahead of the qualifiers for Russia 2018. The current Flamengo coach made his debut on September 1 of that year in a difficult CONMEBOL Qualifiers match against Ecuador.

The result? An impressive 0-3 win in Quito in which Gabriel Jesus (87′ and 90 +2′) and Neymar Jr. (72′) added their names to the top scorers list. Brazil would finish that qualifying process as the absolute leader, adding 31 points with 12 games won, five drawn and only one lost.

Looking ahead to the Qatar 2022 qualifiers, Brazil would once again repeat its dominant role, finishing the group stage in first place with 45 points, 14 wins, three draws and zero losses. During those years of the process, Brazil would lift a Copa América in 2019.

However, the World Cup drought would be devastating for Tite and, after being eliminated by Croatia in Qatar 2022, he would be dismissed.

The experienced coach ended his time with the Seleção with an enviable record of results, being one of the best to date in the history of the Brazilian national team:

  • Tite with the Seleção (2016-2022)*
    • Matches : 81
    • Victories : 61
    • Defeats : 7
    • Ties : 13
    • Goals for : 180
    • Goals against : 37
    • Goal difference : +143
    • Points per game : 2.24

What about the post-Tite era?

Following Tite’s dismissal, the next in line would be Ramon Menezes, who took over as interim, being in charge of the Seleção for about 139 days in which he managed only three games:

  • Friendly : Morocco 2-1 Brazil
  • Friendly : Brazil 4-1 Guinea
  • Friendly : Brazil 2-4 Senegal

In mid-2023, the era of Fernando Diniz would begin, as he would be the interim coach of the Seleção while combining his work as coach of Fluminense. After 185 days and six games in charge, Brazil fired him at the beginning of 2024:

  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Brazil 5-1 Bolivia
  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Peru 0-1 Brazil
  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Brazil 1-1 Venezuela
  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Uruguay 2-0 Brazil
  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Colombia 2-1 Brazil
  • CONMEBOL Qualifiers : Brazil 0-1 Argentina

Finally, Dorival would take over as coach of the Seleção ahead of the 2024 Copa América and, as of the date these words are being written, this has been the record of the experienced coach at the helm of the green-yellow:

  • Friendly : England 0-1 Brazil
  • Friendly : Spain 3-3 Brazil
  • Friendly : Mexico 2-3 Brazil
  • Friendly : United States 1-1 Brazil
  • Copa America 2024 : Brazil 0-0 Costa Rica
  • Copa America 2024 : Paraguay 1-4 Brazil
  • Copa America 2024 : Brazil 1-1 Colombia

These figures, according to SofaScore , show a very negative balance in the Seleção since Tite’s departure. In total, three coaches have taken over the project since that elimination in 2022 and a total of 16 matches have been played since then, in which Brazil has accumulated this negative record:

  • Post-Tite Brazil (2022-Present)*
    • Matches : 16
    • Victories : 6
    • Defeats : 5
    • Ties : 5
    • Goals for : 28
    • Goals against : 22
    • Goal difference : +6

In contrast, Tite’s first 16 games yielded the following results:

  • Tite’s first 16 games with the Seleção*
    • Matches : 16
    • Victories : 13
    • Defeats : 1
    • Ties : 2
    • Goals for : 38
    • Goals against : 5
    • Goal difference : +33

Did Brazil make a mistake by letting Tite go at the time? Or was it more than necessary? The truth is that since that dominant Brazil of the late 2010s and early 2020s, the Seleção has lost much more than just games, it has lost its identity.
