Robinho was arrested in Brazil to serve a nine-year prison sentence for rape handed down in Italy. The arrest occurred after the justice system accepted by majority that he be imprisoned immediately, by approving the sentence issued in the Italian country.
The former Real Madrid footballer was arrested in Santos, in the state of São Paulo, where he lived, and taken to the local Federal Police headquarters. The order came after nine of eleven judges of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) yesterday endorsed homologating the sentence, in a decision that was appealed by the defense lawyers.

The Brazilian was convicted in 2017 for gang raping a young Albanian woman who was celebrating her birthday in a Milan nightclub, in an event that occurred in 2013. Brazil prohibits the extradition of its citizens, so the decision in this case could set a precedent. in other similar cases.

Robinho, 40, defends his innocence and argues that the relationship with the young woman was consensual. However, according to the prosecution, her former player and five of her compatriots made the victim drink “to the point of leaving her unconscious and unable to resist.”
