The first continental title of 2024 will be at stake soon as CONMEBOL has already confirmed the dates for the 2024 Recopa Sudamericana between Fluminense and Liga de Quito. The first leg in Ecuador will take place on Thursday, February 22, while the second leg in Brazil will be played a week later, on Thursday, February 29.
The reigning Sudamericana champs will host the Libertadores winners at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium, while the Rio de Janeiro-based team will play at the iconic Maracanã, where it won its first international trophy a few months back. Both matches will take place at 21:30 Brazil time (19:30 Ecuador time).

Liga aims for the third “Maracanazo”
Interestingly, this duel will feature familiar foes. Liga de Quito upset Fluminense on two occasions, both of them at the Maracanã. The first feat of the “King of Cups” from Ecuador was in the 2008 Libertadores final, when they won on penalties to extend Flu’s wait for a coveted continental success. Only a year later, Liga once again beat the Tricolor in the 2009 Sudamericana final in Rio with a 5-4 aggregate score.
Another Recopa between Brazil and Ecuador
As if that weren’t enough, the Sudamericana Recopa will once again pit a Brazilian club against an Ecuadorian one. Last year, the tournament was contested by Flamengo, who won the 2022 Libertadores, and Independiente del Valle, who were crowned in the Sudamericana.
On that occasion, it was the Ecuadorian team that clinched the title. After a 1-0 away defeat in the first leg, Mengao forced extra time with a last-gasp goal from Giorgian De Arrascaeta, but Martin Anselmi’s team pulled off a shock in the shootout and lifted the trophy at the Maracanã.
