Paris Saint-Germain is showing strong interest in acquiring Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United. Guimarães, who joined Newcastle from Lyon for about £36 million in January 2022, has become a key player.

His exceptional skills have won the hearts of fans at St James’ Park, contributing significantly with 22 goals in 88 matches. Despite not being a traditional goal scorer, his dynamic presence in midfield has been pivotal in Newcastle"s successes, including a notable fourth-place finish in the league last season.

Newcastle in trouble?

However, this season presents challenges for Newcastle, lagging 14 points from the top four and ending at the bottom of their Champions League group. Eddie Howe, the team"s manager, is eager to bolster the squad but faces financial constraints due to profit and sustainability regulations.

This situation might lead to the sale of a prominent player, possibly Guimarães, Alexander Isak, or Sven Botman, to generate funds for new signings. While Miguel Almiron is also rumored to be moving, his transfer fee is expected to be lower than that of his teammates.

Intriguingly, Guimarães is believed to have a £100m release clause. Clubs like Barcelona, despite financial difficulties, and a financially robust PSG are interested in him. PSG, in particular, is reportedly confident about securing Guimarães and may initiate action in the summer transfer window.

Discussions with the player"s advisors have already begun, indicating PSG"s escalating interest amidst Newcastle"s openness to selling a star player. Real Madrid also appears in the conversation, but Guimaraes is not rushing to leave.

Guimarães" deep connection to Newcastle

He feels a deep connection to Newcastle, a sentiment he expressed with gratitude: “They [the fans] have been amazing with me, with my wife, with my dad, with my mum, with everyone," he said. “Every match they sing my name, every time. It has given me a lot of confidence to play."

Guimarães" appreciation extends to Eddie Howe, whom he credits for his and the team"s growth:

“He [Howe] is very special for me. When they signed me I was this level [pointing down] and now I am here [pointing up] because of him. He improves not just me, the team. When he got the team it was fighting relegation, then he got them to Champions League."

This sense of belonging and recognition at Newcastle might be a significant factor in Guimarães" decision about his future.
