A year ago, Martins tore a hamstring muscle. The options were clear but harsh: get surgery and heal properly, or skip it and keep training for the Games. She chose the latter, pushing through the pain. “I had a choice to make: surgery or stick it out for the season. Despite doubts from many about my ability to run again, I’m here,” she explained in an interview with Sportv.
