The incident occurred 40 km away from Alcatrazes Island in Sao Paulo. Before the fateful jump, Candreva was mixed up in a heated argument with his girlfriend, Vitoria Bárbara Momenso. The conflict erupted over suspicions of infidelity, with Candreva checking Momenso’s phone. The disagreement spiraled, leading to Candreva’s impulsive and tragic decision.

Momenso later testified to the police, stating that despite their open relationship, Candreva had become exceedingly jealous that night, escalating to life-threatening threats.

Who was Carlos Candreva?

Carlos, known for his diverse pursuits, was a bank programmer, an author of two poetry books, and an occasional DJ. His creative expressions extended to YouTube, where he shared global news and personal musings, and to Instagram, captivating over 10,000 followers with his original poetry.

The incident was first revealed to the public by influencer Francisco Garcia, who shared audio of the ship crew’s announcement on Instagram. MSC Cruzeiros, operating the cruise, confirmed through an intensive onboard search that Carlos’s leap was intentional.

Despite exhaustive efforts by two support boats, Carlos remained untraceable. This unexpected turn of events led to the cancellation of a scheduled performance by Alexandre Pires, leaving passengers in a state of shock and reflection as the ship continued its journey towards Angra dos Reis.

Adding another layer to the story, Candreva’s sister, Christiane Mota, painted a picture of financial turmoil. She suggested that Candreva was financially overwhelmed due to Momenso’s demands. Mota implied that this financial stress, combined with the intense argument, pushed Candreva to his breaking point, resulting in the heartrending incident at sea.
