Gabriel Martinelli"s story is a lesson in resilience. Once rejected by Manchester United four times during his teenage years, he found his place at Arsenal, becoming a key player under Mikel Arteta.
His journey, marked by determination and growth, began with trials at United where he hoped to make his mark. Despite playing in a friendly match and training alongside notable players, he was turned away, an experience that could have discouraged many.

Reflecting on those trials, Martinelli shared with ESPN Brasil, “From 2015 to 2017, I went to train there [at United] four times for around 15 days at a time. As everyone trains at the same training center and is in the same cafeteria, I saw all the professionals."
During these visits, he encountered stars like Patrice Evra, Marouane Fellaini, and Paul Pogba, with Pogba"s humility leaving a lasting impression. “I asked to take pictures for [Patrice] Evra, [Marouane] Fellaini and others. [Paul] Pogba knew I was Brazilian and asked if everything was OK and where I played. We took a picture together," Martinelli recalled.
Despite United"s concerns over his physique, leading to their decision against signing him, Martinelli saw this period as crucial for his development. “Those training days were super important for me to adapt to the style of play, the players, and how fast the game is here," he said.
Ultimately, Martinelli views his experiences with United not with regret but as a necessary part of his journey to Arsenal. “I was hoping…when you get a trial you think it’s going to work out. And at a club the size of Manchester United, it makes you anxious. But things happen for a reason. It wasn’t where I was supposed to be, it was at Arsenal," he reflected.
This mindset underscores his belief in the serendipity of his career path, leading him to over 100 appearances for Arsenal and representing Brazil on the international stage.
