The tragic floods in Rio Grande do Sul affected this region to its deepest foundations. In addition to the countless material losses, the joint pain over the deaths and disappearances has managed to awaken a feeling of brotherhood and unity in the southern part of Brazil.

Even in football, a terrain that is sometimes dangerous due to hot rivalries, the clubs in the lowest categories of the Brazilian organizational chart have put aside their differences to make a joint request, especially after having been ignored by the CBF when it came to speaking of the momentary suspension of its league competition, the Série C.

The gaúcho clubs of the Série C united to request the suspension of the tournament

Despite the refusal of up to five Brasileirão clubs, the CBF finally made the decision to postpone two days of the league championship, until the situation in the southern part of the country is regularized.

This deadline, in principle, should also coincide with the extraordinary meeting that the CBF will hold together with the clubs to make a key decision on the future of the Brasileirão.

However, the entity that governs all categories of Brazilian football seems to have ignored the requests of the gaucho clubs that play in lower categories, since the situation has also affected them as well as the largest in the region.

Currently, in Rio Grande do Sul, there is no team that plays in Série B, the second category of Brazilian football, but there are three that currently play in Série C, the third division.

The league tournament has continued its course and the matches of these three teams, Ypiranga, Caixas and São José, have been postponed, but the rest of the teams continue playing normally. This has led them to form a Gaucho alliance demanding the total paralysis of Série C.

Since the beginning of the floods, these three teams have helped their communities by carrying out various activities to collect food and supplies for those affected.

However, many of them feel ignored by a CBF that looked after the interests of the Brasileirão, its star competition, ignoring the other, more modest, clubs in Rio Grande do Sul along the way.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.
