Roberto Firmino, once a celebrated forward at Liverpool, now finds himself in a risky position at Al-Ahli, the prominent Saudi Arabian football club. His transfer to Al-Ahli six months ago, which was a free move, initially seemed promising when he scored three goals in his debut.

However, since that high point, his performance has dipped significantly. From being a key player who once donned the captain’s armband, Firmino’s role has diminished, and he hasn’t been a regular in the starting lineup since late October.

Interest in Firmino is emerging from other clubs. Al-Fateh, a competitor in the Saudi Pro League, is contemplating a loan deal for him. Furthermore, Steven Gerrard, who shares a Liverpool connection with Firmino, is reportedly keen on bringing him to Al-Ettifaq. This move would reunite Firmino with former teammates Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum.

The Saudi Pro League has a regulation that limits the number of foreign players in a team to eight. Al-Ahli, considering this rule, might see the departure of Firmino as an opportunity to recruit another high-profile international player. This situation is compounded by personal tragedy for Firmino, who recently lost his father to a heart attack.

Michael Emenalo, the Saudi Pro League’s director of football, has not ruled out the possibility of significant signings in the upcoming transfer window. He emphasizes the strategic importance of foreign player acquisitions while also acknowledging the need to balance incoming talent with players potentially moving out.
