Brazil’s early elimination in the quarter-finals of the Copa América has sparked much debate and criticism within the Brazilian national team. Among the players singled out is Endrick, the Palmeiras star and future Real Madrid player. Aged just 17, the promising forward has caused controversy with statements deemed inappropriate by many Brazilian fans.

Asked after the penalty shootout defeat to Uruguay, Endrick said: “We have players who could be on holiday, but they came here because it was their dream. I hope the Brazilian people will be with us.” His words sparked outrage on social media. Some fans accused him of thinking he was doing the national team a favour by defending Brazil’s colours. “Learn Endrick, coming to the national team is not a holiday camp,” one user commented.

Others have come to his defense, arguing that at just 17, it is normal to show inexperience. His exceptional footballing skills should not be called into question for a verbal slip-up related to his young age.
