Armando Mendonça, the club’s second vice-president, has declared the impeachment of club president Augusto Melo as “inevitable.” This stems from ongoing police investigations into suspected money laundering connected to the club’s dealings with Rede Social Media Design Ltda, the intermediary in their master sponsorship deal with VaideBet.

Fraud allegations

Mendonça’s stern statement came after Alex Cassundé, the owner of the intermediary company, testified to the Civil Police, denying any wrongdoing or involvement in the financial negotiations between Corinthians and VaideBet.

He claimed ignorance about the financial details of the agreement with VaideBet, raising questions about the transparency of the transaction.

Further deepening the club’s internal crisis, Mendonça accused Melo of engaging in petty political retaliation. He shared an incident where he was temporarily stripped of his vice-presidential credentials at the Neo Química Arena, describing it as unnecessary and vindictive.

The credentials were eventually returned, but the damage was done, highlighting a fractious atmosphere that could be distracting the team from its on-field battles.

As Corinthians navigate these choppy waters, the focus should not only be on the impending impeachment and its implications but also on how these off-field distractions will impact the team’s performance.

With their league position at risk, Corinthians must resolve these internal conflicts swiftly to refocus on their primary goal: football.
