Copa Libertadores: two Brazilian teams, former champions and debutants open phase 2

Phase 2 of the Copa Libertadores starts today with matches that have everything: from important teams on the continent that have lifted the trophy in the past to others that are competing for it for the first time. In addition, in this instance two Brazilian teams make their debut that fate made it possible for them to cross paths.

There are 16 two-game series, with the first leg this week and the return next week. The winners will go to the next phase, where the winners of each key will go to the group round, while the losers will go to the Copa Sudamericana.

Bragantino begins its journey today against Águilas Doradas in Medellín. It is the absolute debut in the largest regional tournament of the Colombian team that is in the middle of the table in the country’s league, while the Brazilian team, which has just drawn 2-2 against São Paulo for the Paulista Championship, has already participated in the 2022 edition.

The other Brazilian team that joins the competition in this phase is Botafogo, who will face Aurora tomorrow in Cochabamba. The Bolivian team comes with the emotional boost of having eliminated Melgar of Peru in the first instance of the cup and the Brazilian team seeks to vindicate itself after what happened in the Brasileirão, when it let a 13-point advantage in the lead slip by.

Today’s remaining duels pit Portuguesa against Palestino from Chile in Caracas, and in El Alto from Bolivia the local Always Ready will seek to take advantage of the 3,900 meters of altitude when they host Sporting Cristal from Peru.

Nacional from Uruguay, Atlético Nacional from Colombia and Colo Colo from Chile are the former Libertadores champions who appear in this instance and who have the obligation to honor their history to reach the group stage. They will collide against Academia Puerto Cabello (Venezuela), Nacional (Paraguay) and Godoy Cruz (Argentina), respectively.
