Copa do Brasil: the round of 16 matches, with Flamengo against Palmeiras as the main event

The round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, the most inclusive and federal championship in the country, has been drawn. The main event will be the duel between Flamengo and Palmeiras, although Corinthians will also face Grêmio, Botafogo against Bahia and Athletico Paranaense against Red Bull Bragantino.

The home and away matches will be played on the base dates of July 31 and August 7. As they advance from one phase to the next, the teams receive a cash prize of around 13 million dollars and a ticket to the next Copa Libertadores reserved for the champion.

Flamengo against Palmeiras is a head-to-head match between the most successful teams in recent years and the strongest squads. The first leg will be at the Maracaná and the return leg at the Allianz Parque.

The match between Corinthians and Grêmio is also attractive due to the rich history of both clubs, although they are currently going through football crises and are in the relegation zone of the Brasileirão. In this case, the first match will be in São Paulo and the second in Porto Alegre.

In the match between Botafogo and Bahia, there is, in the background, a duel between large football conglomerates. The Fogão of Eagle Football, whose most visible face and majority owner is the American businessman John Textor, against the team managed by Rogério Ceni and which is part of the City Group.

Athletico Paranaense and Red Bull Bragantino, on the other hand, have the special quality of being two teams that are in the middle or higher of the Brazilian league table, with very similar levels. Furacão is eighth and the Paulistas are tenth.

The reigning Copa do Brasil champions are São Paulo, who will host Goiás in the first leg of this direct clash. The second division team is going through a bad moment and is far from the positions to return to the Série A, a category that it lost last season.
