A “suspensive effect” temporarily stops the enforcement of a ruling while an appeal is pending. In Gabigol’s case, it means his two-year doping suspension is paused, allowing him to play and train with Flamengo until his appeal is decided. This legal measure ensures he can continue his professional activities without the immediate consequences of the suspension until a final decision is reached.
What happened?
Gabigol was initially suspended on February 25 for two years after being accused of tampering with an anti-doping test procedure. His legal team successfully argued for a suspensive effect during the appeal. “We’re relieved that Gabigol can rejoin the team as we work through the appeal process,” said his lawyer.

The incident involved Gabigol allegedly interfering with a doping test at Flamengo’s training center before a match against Fluminense. The Brazilian Doping Control Authority, which regularly conducts surprise tests, accused him of attempting to obstruct the examination.
While Gabigol’s return is confirmed, his future at Flamengo remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the year and renewal discussions ongoing. Meanwhile, Flamengo prepares to face Amazonas at Maracanã this Wednesday in the Copa do Brasil.
