At the Paris Olympics, Brazilian swimmers are setting new standards. Mafê Costa, only 21, broke a 76-year old non-finalist streak for Brazil in the women’s 400m freestyle. She secured her spot in the finals in her first Olympic appearance, finishing seventh with a time of 4:03.47.
Despite this, Costa sees potential for improvement. “I’ve trained for better times,” she noted. “Mistakes were made, but I’m set to correct them in the finals.”

Guilherme Costa, nicknamed “Cachorrão,” also made headlines by posting the second-fastest time in the men’s 400m freestyle heats, clocking in at 3:44.23. With his strong performance, expectations for his next races are high.
He previously won gold in several events at the 2023 Pan American Games and took third in the 400m freestyle at the 2022 World Championships.

Both swimmers have a demanding schedule ahead. Mafê Costa is also competing in the 200m freestyle and two relay events, while Guilherme aims for medals in the longer freestyle races.
They approach the finals this Saturday at 3:42 pm Brasília time, ready to convert their early successes into podium finishes. With each race, they demonstrate their readiness to compete and succeed at the highest levels.
