Nicknamed “Japinha,” Augusto Akio had an atypical journey to get to this point. Coming from a modest family, he started skateboarding at the age of 7 with a simple model for 1.99 reais, because his parents did not believe in his chances of success in this sport.
But the young man proved otherwise, gradually establishing himself on the Brazilian national scene. In 2022, he even won a silver medal at the World Championships, demonstrating his full potential. His efforts and determination finally paid off at the Paris Olympics, where he put in a breathtaking performance.
Having qualified for the final, Augusto Akio was able to surpass himself to win the bronze medal with a score of 91.85 points. A victory that was all the more symbolic since August 7, the day of the final, would have been the birthday of his grandmother, Elza Yuriko Takahashi, who died in 1991.
Beyond his exploits on the skateboard, Augusto Akio has also distinguished himself by his talent in the art of juggling. Injured three years ago and unable to practice skateboarding, he then turned to this new discipline, which he quickly mastered.
