As Brazil gears up for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, it’s all hands on deck with a whopping 25 tons of equipment, including wheelchairs and medical supplies, making the journey across the Atlantic. Starting this Monday, the table tennis, rowing, and sitting volleyball teams, totaling 72 members, will hit the road first for the Paralympic Village.

The total squad is impressive, with 254 athletes ready to compete, supported by guides and technical staff. However, while most teams will acclimate in Europe, the boccia athletes are bucking the trend, choosing to train back in Brazil. This move could put them at a disadvantage, not having the same time to adjust to the Parisian setting as their teammates.

Breakdown

Now, about the gear—5,000 kg will be carried as hand luggage and over 11,500 kg as checked luggage. The breakdown shows meticulous planning, but depending heavily on rented equipment in Europe could spell trouble.

For instance, the rowing and canoeing boats rented from different locations might not feel familiar to the athletes who rely on them, potentially affecting their performance.

The equestrian team adds another layer of complexity. Their horses, including Millennium and Denzel, will travel from Germany to Versailles. While it’s a logistical feat, it also highlights the enormous effort and resources needed to make sure everything goes smoothly.

As athletes depart in stages throughout August, the complexity of this operation becomes clear. It’s not just about physical presence but ensuring that athletes are mentally and physically ready to shine. Brazil’s strategy of relying heavily on European resources is risky—it puts a lot at stake, including the athletes’ comfort with their equipment. In the world of competitive sports, familiarity can often be the edge an athlete needs to succeed.
