What Happened?
Zico, aged 71, had come to France to witness the Olympic opening but instead became the target of a sophisticated robbery. French police, with the Brigade for the Repression of Banditry at the helm, are now investigating the theft that stripped Zico of a diamond necklace, cash, and a high-end Rolex watch.
The incident took place in a taxi, where a thief distracted the driver as another swiped the briefcase from the back seat.
The timing of Zico’s loss coincides with other security issues at the Games. Argentina’s Olympic team also suffered from theft, as their head coach Javier Mascherano reported a burglary at their training base before their game against Morocco.
Paris is currently teeming with over 11.5 million tourists attracted by the Olympic games, according to the city’s tourism board. The influx has proven lucrative for local businesses but has also increased the opportunities for theft.
Zico’s ordeal and the Argentine team’s experience underscore the broader security vulnerabilities that can overshadow the spirit of international sportsmanship.
