For the third time, the Brazilians will try to win the gold medal, a feat that eluded them in their previous attempts in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008.
A story of finals, a story of revenge
Brazil has come close to reaching the Olympics twice, each time falling to the same opponents: the United States. In the 2004 and 2008 finals, the Brazilians had to settle for silver after heartbreaking defeats, 2-1 and 1-0, both in extra time.
Today, Marta, the sole survivor of those campaigns, is determined to lead her team to victory in what could be her last major international tournament.
So Saturday’s clash between Brazil and the United States represents not only a final, but also another chapter in a historic rivalry. The Americans, four-time Olympic champions, have won gold four times (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012) and silver in 2000. Their impressive record makes them the greatest dominators in the discipline.
In addition to the finals losses, Brazil have also tried to win the bronze medal three times, in 1996 in Atlanta, in 2000 in Sydney, and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. However, the Seleção have always seen their hopes fade away, beaten by Norway, Germany and Canada respectively.
The Americans, a major obstacle for Brazil
In 2024, the challenge remains immense for Brazil. The United States, despite having won the bronze medal at the last Olympiad in Tokyo, remain the big favorites in this final. With five Olympic finals under their belt, including four victories, the Americans represent the ultimate obstacle to overcome for the Brazilians in search of their first Olympic title.
This Saturday, the Parc des Princes will be the scene of an epic, historic confrontation, where Brazil will attempt to rewrite history and finally climb to the top step of the podium.
We wish them all the best.
