Botafogo has formally requested the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to exclude referee Raphael Claus and video assistant referee Daiane Muniz from their matches, amid an ongoing investigation into alleged game manipulation.
This follows a controversial match against Flamengo, where Botafogo lost 2-1. The club claims an unflagged offside and a disputed foul led to goals that unfairly decided the match.

John Textor, owner of Botafogo, highlighted these refereeing errors during a Commission of Inquiry (CPI) into Game Manipulation. Textor stated, “These errors directly harmed the result of the match, undermining the fairness of the competition.” Botafogo argues that the current climate around the investigation compromises Claus and Muniz’s impartiality.
In response, ABRAFUT issued a statement defending Claus and Muniz, accusing Textor of trying to manipulate public opinion. “We vehemently repudiate the unfounded statements made by Mr. John Textor. Our referees work with honesty and honor, and there has been no evidence whatsoever to support these serious accusations of match-fixing,” said ABRAFUT.
Despite Botafogo’s protests, the CBF confirmed Claus will referee the upcoming rematch with Flamengo. ABRAFUT continues to support Claus and Muniz, emphasizing their professionalism and integrity. The association also demanded Textor provide proof of his allegations, warning of potential legal consequences for unfounded claims.
