Botafogo has just made a big move by signing Vitinho, the right-back from Burnley, signaling fresh tactics and a bit of drama on the team. They announced the deal this past Friday, bringing in the 25-year-old to replace Damián Suárez, who’s currently hashing it out with the club’s bosses and might be heading to Peñarol in Uruguay.

The deal’s not just about Botafogo shaking things up. Cruzeiro, where Vitinho first showed his potential, is also in for a payday. Thanks to FIFA’s rules on training compensation, they’re pocketing about R$996 thousand from his 8 million euro transfer—that’s around R$49.83 million. Not bad for a club that only saw Vitinho play one pro match for them back in 2018.

Vitinho himself has had quite the journey. Starting at Cruzeiro, he barely got game time before moving to Cercle Brugge in Belgium and then to Burnley. Over in England, he got plenty of action with 80 games, scored four goals, and dished out six assists. Just this season, he’s already scored once and set up another goal in three games.
Botafogo’s getting a seasoned player in Vitinho as they work through the Suárez drama. With the team needing a solid right-back and not willing to let Suárez go without a fair deal, Vitinho’s arrival is timely. How he’ll fit into Botafogo’s setup and how the team manages the transition will be something to watch.
