It was a chaotic moment before the grand start of the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The French high-speed rail network, the TGV, was targeted by coordinated attacks across the country. Unfortunately, these events caused delays in the journey of the Brazilian women’s football team who were traveling to Paris for the event.

The Brazilian athletes were eventually able to participate in the ceremony held on the banks of the Seine in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators. Canoeist Isaquias Queiroz and the captain of the women’s rugby sevens team, Raquel Kochhann, had the honor of carrying the Brazilian flag during the delegation parade. This was the first time an Olympic Games opening ceremony took place outside a stadium.

However, the attacks on the French rail network caused chaos at stations. At Montparnasse station in Paris, hundreds of travelers were stranded, unable to move. According to French authorities, several TGV network centers had been set on fire by vandals, paralyzing many lines. Many families had planned to take advantage of the long weekend and the Olympics to travel, but were left stuck. It is estimated that nearly 800,000 people were affected by these massive disruptions.

Despite these transport problems, the Brazilian delegation was finally able to participate in the opening ceremony of the Games. Although composed of 277 athletes, only 50 of them were present on the boat flying the Brazilian flag on the Seine.
