“I meant to elbow a defender but ended up facing the goal with the ball at my feet,” said Adriano, recounting the lead-up to his famous goal. The match was tense, with Argentina moments from victory. “The foul on Carlos Tévez set me up. I hit the ball hard, not aiming anywhere specific,” he added.
This goal shot Adriano to fame and marked a new start in his career. Before the tournament, he was relatively unknown in Brazil due to his early move to Italy. “The 2004 Copa América was my breakout. It was my chance to show Brazil my skill,” he shared.
