After years of turbulence, Paris Saint-Germain finally seems to have found a balance that allows it to shine on the European scene. This is in any case the opinion of Maxwell, former Brazilian defender of the Parisian club and now an attentive observer of his former club.

Arriving in 2012, Maxwell has witnessed the ups and downs of PSG in recent years. Incessant changes of coaches, tensions behind the scenes and constant media pressure have long undermined the team’s performance on the field. But according to the former left-back, things have now changed.

“There were a lot of changes last year but I think this team has a way of playing that works. There is a very good organization, it’s super solid, with incredible offensive qualities,” underlines Maxwell. An observation which is verified on the pitch, with PSG which managed to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

The great architect of this renewal?

Coach Luis Enrique, who arrived last summer. “Luis Enrique has brought stability to the game. He makes everyone respect their position on the pitch and then be more creative and efficient,” explains Maxwell.

Beyond the game, it is also the club’s environment which has improved, according to the former Brazilian player. “The club is also more stable outside. It’s true that he always had pressure from outside which was not positive for the club. That’s not why there was no success in the Champions League, but it didn’t help. There was not the necessary serenity. It’s different now,” he emphasizes.

This newfound stability within the club allows PSG to fully concentrate on its sporting objectives. And Maxwell does not hide his hopes of seeing his former club reach the end of the Champions League this season. “I really hope that they will go through to the end because I am still a PSG supporter,” he confides.

After years of doubts and criticism, Paris Saint-Germain seems to have found the winning recipe to shine on the European scene. And this can only rejoice a former player like Maxwell, who experienced the club’s darkest hours before seeing its rebirth today.

Remembering Zagallo
