Today marks 10 years since the Mineirazo: the historic and still inexplicable thrashing by the German team against the Seleção at the Mineirão Stadium, a match that forever changed the course of Brazilian football.

For many, this was the turning point that finally brought down a Seleção that was living off past glories, and which, ten years later, is still trying to return to the top of the world scene without much success.

How has Brazil fared since the 1-7 against Germany?

After the 2014 World Cup and the painful elimination against Germany, Brazil dismissed Felipe Scolari on July 14 of that same year. A few days later, Dunga would take over as Brazil’s coach, a position he held until mid-2016.

The Dunga Era (2014-2016)

Dunga debuted with a friendly against Colombia in September 2014. Brazil won by a narrow 1-0 and, after a long history of victories in friendlies prior to the 2015 Copa America, Brazil arrived in Chile aiming to reclaim the continental title.

After defeating Peru, losing to Colombia, and beating Venezuela, Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were eliminated by Paraguay via penalties (3-4) after drawing 1-1 in regular time.

With relative success, Dunga managed a good return in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, which allowed him to keep his position until the 2016 Copa America Centenario. There, the catastrophe happened.

After drawing with Ecuador (0-0), thrashing Haiti (7-1), and losing to Peru (0-1), Brazil was out in the group stage, which triggered Dunga’s dismissal, leaving the position on June 14, 2016.

The Tite Era (2016-2022)

Just two days after Dunga’s dismissal, the CBF announced Tite as the new coach for the 2018 Russia World Cup. With Tite, the Seleção would achieve its best period of stability, but the absence of titles and irregular performances at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups ultimately led to his departure.

Tite debuted with Brazil in a challenging match in Quito against Ecuador for the CONMEBOL qualifiers, winning 0-3 and restoring good sensations to that Seleção. Brazil finished the qualifiers as the absolute leader and arrived at Russia 2018 as the clear favorite.

Brazil debuted in that World Cup drawing against Switzerland (1-1), but solid victories against Costa Rica (2-0) and Serbia (0-2) allowed them to advance as group leaders. In the round of 16, Brazil repeated the result against Mexico, winning 2-0. However, they were painfully eliminated in the quarterfinals by Belgium (1-2).

Despite the elimination, Brazil arrived at the 2019 Copa America as the clear favorite. Hosting the tournament and showing an excellent level demonstrated in the qualifiers, the tournament was set, and so it was. Brazil dominated in the group stage, quarters, and semis, facing and thrashing Peru in the final.

To date, this is the last and only title Brazil has won since that fateful afternoon in 2014.

Brazil repeated an equally good performance at the 2021 Copa America, an atypical tournament marked by the pandemic, reaching the grand final against Argentina. However, this time luck did not accompany Tite’s men, who fell 1-0 thanks to a solitary goal from Ángel di María.

Brazil completed the qualifiers for Qatar 2022 as the absolute leader, but that World Cup would ultimately seal Tite’s career at the helm of the Seleção. Brazil overcame the group stage with some difficulties, and after thrashing South Korea 4-1 in the round of 16, the quarterfinal meeting was against, at that time, the reigning world runner-up, Croatia.

After drawing 0-0 in regular time and 1-1 in extra time, everything was decided on penalties, where the Croatians prevailed by a solid 4-2. After the World Cup, Tite was dismissed.

Interims, doubts, and Dorival Júnior (2022-Present)

After Tite, Brazil went through a process of almost two years without a fixed coach. Ramon Menezes assumed as interim at the beginning of 2023 and held the position until mid that year, when Fernando Diniz, who would combine his role at the CBF with his position at Fluminense, was chosen to continue the interim.

Following a crisis of results and poor performances in the qualifiers, Brazil gave the opportunity to Dorival Júnior, a coach who, since January 8, 2024, leads the Seleção.

As we wait to see how Dorival’s process advances, Brazil continues trying to reconnect with its best version. Will Dorival Júnior be the right coach to achieve this? Only time will tell.
