Brazil is out of the 2024 Copa América. After three draws and just one win in the continental tournament, the team led by Dorival Júnior from the bench and led by Vinícius Jr. from the field fell on penalties to Uruguay in the quarterfinals and the criticism and doubts towards the project have only just begun.

The focus of criticism from the press and fans is on different figures. For many, the main culprits are the players, who are far from having the magic of the Brazil of yesteryear, while others have put their focus on Dorival Júnior’s strategy.

To fully understand who the Seleção’s high points and low points were, today at Sambafoot we’re taking a closer look at the players’ statistics throughout the 2024 Copa América. As always, using the ever-reliable data from the specialist website, SofaScore .

Brazil eliminated from Copa América: Paquetá, Arana and Guimarães, the high marks

Scorer and one assist in all four of Brazil’s games at the 2024 Copa América, Lucas Paquetá shines as the Brazilian footballer with the highest score according to SofaScore metrics .

The controversial and investigated West Ham United footballer averaged a score of 7.40 after the three group stage matches and the quarter-final against Uruguay and was, among other figures, the great highlight of Brazil during the tournament.

Second place in the ranking goes to Guilherme Arana, a player from Atlético Mineiro who only played two games in this Copa América (against Costa Rica and Uruguay) and who averaged a general score of 7.35 in the tournament.

Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimarães, the pivot and leader, takes the bronze on this list. A starter in all four of Brazil’s matches, Bruno accumulated a total score of 7.28, making him the third Brazilian with the highest overall score in this Copa América.

Vinicius, Rodrygo and Endrick; the disappointments

After the highlights, it’s time to talk about the big disappointments. With two goals, Vinicius Jr. left the Copa América as Brazil’s top scorer in the tournament, but his childish warning in the match against Colombia cost him a sanction that prevented him from playing in the key match against Uruguay, earning criticism from friends and strangers.

Against Costa Rica, Vini accumulated a score of only 6.6 points, while against Colombia he added a similar score, 6.8, so his final average of 7.20, in large part, is due to the only great game he played in the Copa América: the rout against Paraguay in which he scored twice and added 8.2 points.

Another player who has received huge criticism is Brazil’s number 10, Rodrygo Goes. His Copa America was, to say the least, modest. Carrying the heavy jersey number on his back, the Real Madrid player only scored one positive note in his debut against Costa Rica (7.9), but against Paraguay (6.7), Colombia (6.7) and Uruguay (6.7) he barely managed to stand out.

In the four games in which he started, Rodrygo only averaged 2.5 shots per game, but only 0.5 of them were on target. He did not score, did not assist and averaged 14.5 possessions lost. With a final score of 7.0, Rodrygo was the tenth highest-scoring player for Brazil in the tournament.

We close with Endrick, the young and talented Real Madrid player who, at 17 years old, carried the heavy number 9 on his back. Due to his youth and inexperience, it is difficult to measure Endrick with the same yardstick as the rest of his teammates, but his first major tournament with Brazil was, to say the least, disappointing.

He played in all four matches, coming on as a substitute in three of them and starting just one. His shooting, dribbling and passing statistics were practically non-existent during the tournament. He averaged a score of 6.53 and was heavily criticised for his poor performance in the elimination against Uruguay.
